Sanguches en Caminito - 8 inches by ten inches - acrylic on canvas
What struck me as I walked through Caminito in Buenos Aires with my friends Mari and Ceci were all the bold colors, particularly red. For this painting, I started with a layer of very deep red (the same hue as the wall behind the keyboardist) across the entire canvas, and I let it bleed through all the other colors as I added them to the canvas. If you zoom in, you'll notice this red in everything, even in what appears to be solid black. As I contrasted the red with the yellows of the door and the metallic gold of the accordion, the painting began to strongly take on the personality of this vibrant neighborhood as it lives in my memory.
